Hi my loves,
I hope your year is off to a great start!
Today I’ll be talking about a highly requested topic; intermittent fasting (IF).
My first encounter with IF was on Bahati Nzuri’s blog; where she talked about how she benefited from it. At the time, I was looking for ways to lose weight so I was exploring options before I settled on any. I was inclined to intermittent fasting so I read exhaustively about it.
According to the internet, intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods for fasting and eating. I won’t go into detail about the theory of it, but I’ll recommend a site which I used for reference a lot.
For this post, I’d like to share my experience.
There are about three methods of IF, I did the 16/8 method where you eat within an 8-hour window and fast for the remaining 16 hours in a day. I used to do it 5 days a week, that’s Monday to Friday. So I would skip breakfast, then eat my lunch at 2:00 pm and dinner by 10:00 pm. This approach was quite easy for me because I used to leave home for the office at 6:00 am so having breakfast wasn’t much of a big deal. I used to carry packed lunch; to help me avoid eating junk food.
During the fast, it’s okay to take liquids, that’s water or black tea without sugar. Because the idea of intermittent fasting, is to give the body a longer window period to utilize the sugars and calories in the body.
How long did I do this for?
I started my IF journey in April last year and went on with it till August; so those were about five months.
How effective was it?
The reason I picked IF is because I wanted a fast and easy way to lose weight and boy did I lose it! I lost 10 kgs in about 2 months and a half. For a moment there I took about a week’s break from IF because I wasn’t ready for such drastic drops in my weight. So intermittent fasting is a very effective method of loosing weight, especially if you intentionally eat healthy during that period.
Another thing that attracted me to IF was the fact that it’s not so strict on ‘healthy eating; because junk food and I are almost inseparable. But I tried my best to cut down on junk and I think that’s why it was more effective.
Apart from losing weight, my body felt lighter, less clogged, I felt quite refreshed.
Contrary to thoughts that fasting makes you hungry and lazy; I realized that I became even more energetic.
It’s a sustainable method of maintaining a healthy diet lifestyle.
I lost weight everywhere. Hey girls, you know what I mean? Lol! With IF it’s very hard to lose weight selectively.
As soon as I stopped IF completely, I started gaining weight, not a lot of it though. So the best way to work around intermittent fasting is to embrace it as your lifestyle and to find the balance that work for you.
As I write this, it’s been about 6 months of full break from Intermittent Fasting, but I’m planning to get back to it. This time not particularly for weight loss, but for maintaining a healthy diet.
Thank you so much for dropping by here today, if you have any more questions about IF, drop them down in the comment's section.
Love & Hugs!
